Set in the future, the story follows a younger soldier named Johnny Rico and his exploits in the Mobile Infantry. Rico's army profession progresses from recruit to non-commissioned officer and lastly to officer towards the backdrop of an interstellar warfare between mankind and an arachnoid species identified as "the Bugs".
